Whirlpool- An Ode to Hokusai and Hiroshige expresses my continued fascination with the art of Japan. This piece was one of the first in the my excursion into the digital media. It was created digitally from a single photographic self-portrait altered repeatedly and layered over itself dozens of times. As the layers merged, the intricate, sea foam like shapes emerged. These shapes remind me of the works of the well known Japanese artists Hokusai and Hiroshige. The whirlpool reminds me of a print of Hiroshige hanging in my home; the red and blue ‘waves’ are exact negatives of one another. These ‘waves’ and details within them, remind me of the prints of Hokusai. Though these similarities were not consciously intended, these are a subconscious expression of my admiration of these artists and their styles of work.
