The "domesticating" and the "conditioning" are the two main subjects adressed in the piece.
In "Man Adapting" (1965), René Dubos announce "the emergence by selection of a majority of human beings genetically adapted to accept, without the slightest reflection, a life ruled and assisted in an overpopulated and polluted world, among which any whim or spontaneity would have disappeared.
Dubos also describes the genetic transmission of character traits to marginalize any propensity in the rebellion. So, the one who expresses a divergent point of view, who lives differently than his Neighbors, becomes fast the black sheep of the herd. Conditioned to consider the standards as a reality, the herd condemns the one who disturbs.
The opinion of others exerts a pressure to encourage the black sheep to go into the row and use as warning to the lost ewes which would think of going out of the row. The fear of the public opinion, makes people to police themselves and walk straight. Each sheep becomes the Shepherd's dog of the herd.
A japanese proverb says more or less as follows : "Do not be the nail that sticks out because it will be the first to receive a hammer blow.
To talk about these ideas in the piece, a parallel will be made between the human and animal. And more particulary between human and dog, who is the most domesticated animal in western contries. Dogs and wolves, were similar, but the wolf kept his instinct of survival by living in the wild, while the dog has been domesticated and thus lost his strength...
The man of today is a Dog!
How from bestial, instinctive, spontaneous movements, did we come to a place where we think, live, move all the same, nothing extravagant? How wild dogs became a chihuahuas? How by force, by pressure from the autority, the others, by "conditioning" we became domestic animals, in a state of dependence such to our master, the society, the système, that we follow him blindly?
Fortunately comes the reward, the bone, for the one who knows how to obey, the objects of consumption, useless but became essenciels...
In the performance, it is not a question of making the dog, nor even of reproducing his movements. The simple fact of being girthed and attached to a rope, is enought to create the comparaison with the dog in leash.
I whish to look for, how instinctively we would move, we would struggle if we were on a leash. In which moment, the exhaustion, the pain, the fair push you to renounce, to resignation, to accept?
When the thirst of liberty give place to the "domestication", to the "conditioning"?How from bestial, instinctive movements, spontaneous, we became to move all in the same way.
I want to develop an exploration on the gestures of the everyday life, the repetition of learnt movements, executed in the held, nothing spontaneous or extravagant. And explore the objet of the doghouse as symbol of the house, the comfort, the safety, but also as object of consumption. I wish built for a doghouse which can be transformed into chair, table, bed or every others unnecessary objects of the everyday life which are necessary for us from now on, even essential.
